A plank that counts itself down
Start a two-minute plank with your phone on the floor in front of you. Somewhere around forty seconds your neck starts doing something it should not, because you want to know how long is left. By ninety seconds you are checking every few seconds, and the position has quietly fallen apart.
A dead hang is worse. The phone is on the floor, you are not, and there is no way to look at it without letting go of something.
What Yield does instead
Timed holds in Yield count out loud. Each second gets a quiet tick, the last three get a beep, and the end gets a different sound so there is no question whether you are done. You can put the phone face down and hold the position with your eyes wherever they should be.
The screen still shows a full-size countdown for anyone who wants it, and a tap pauses. The sound is the part that means you do not have to look.
The details that make it usable
The sounds respect your phone's silent switch, so a hold in a quiet gym does not announce itself to the room. They mix with whatever else is playing rather than stopping it, so your music keeps going underneath. If you would rather train in silence, there is a switch in Profile.
Holding past the target is allowed and encouraged. The timer keeps counting, and what you actually held is what gets logged, so a plank you extended by thirty seconds is recorded as the longer hold rather than the number you planned.
Why the coach cares how long you held
A hold is the one exercise where the useful measurement is time rather than weight, and it is also the one people most often guess at afterwards. Yield logs the real number, so when your coach suggests the next plank it is working from what you did last time.
Holds also rest differently. A timed hold does not need the long rest a heavy squat needs, so Yield gives it a shorter rest and counts that when it estimates how long your session will take.
More on reading a hold mid-position in a plank timer you can read mid-hold, and on rest lengths in a rest timer that fits the set you just did.
