How to unlock barbell exercises with your AI coach

Published 10 September 2026

Picture a lifter on their second week with Yield. They've got real barbell experience from years ago, but nothing logged in the app yet — as far as their training history shows, they're brand new. The coach keeps proposing dumbbell and bodyweight work. Reasonable, if all it can see is an empty log. But this lifter knows exactly what they're doing, and waiting around to "earn" a squat rack feels wrong.

It shouldn't take that long, and it doesn't.

Just tell it

Type it into the chat, in your own words — "I want to use the barbell," "let's do a real squat," "I've got a rack, use it." You don't need the exact exercise name from some catalog. The coach reads what you're asking for, and the moment you ask for barbell work, it's unlocked for that conversation.

The other way in is just doing it: log one real set of any barbell movement — through the coach's own warm-up, or by adding the exercise yourself — and that movement (and your beginner status generally) is unlocked from then on. Asking is just the faster path if you already know what you're capable of.

Why it works this way at all

The default is conservative on purpose — a true beginner shouldn't be handed a barbell squat before the coach knows anything about them. Here's why that default exists in the first place. But conservative-by-default and refusing-when-asked are different things. The unlock exists specifically so an experienced lifter isn't punished for a training history the app hasn't seen yet.
