Why your AI coach won't suggest a barbell on day one
Published 10 September 2026
Early in building Yield, a brand-new test account — zero logged workouts, zero history — got handed a session that opened with two sets of pull-ups. The account had never done one. Nobody told the AI to avoid that; it just seemed like a reasonable exercise to include, and it wasn't wrong exactly — it just had no idea whether the person on the other end could do a single rep.
That's the actual risk with an AI coach: it's confident by default, and confidence isn't the same thing as knowing what you can do.
How Yield actually prevents this
The fix isn't a instruction telling the AI to "be careful with beginners." Instructions like that get forgotten, reinterpreted, or quietly dropped — the AI reasons in the moment, and reasoning is not the same as a rule that can't be broken.
Instead, Yield removes the option entirely. A pull-up (or any movement whose very first rep demands strength you haven't shown yet) is simply not in the list of exercises the AI is allowed to choose from — for that lifter, at that moment. There's no way for it to "forget" not to suggest one, because the option was never on the table to begin with. The same goes for barbell work on a true first session: it defaults to bodyweight and dumbbell training until you've logged something.
How you get it back
Neither restriction is a wall. Two things unlock a withheld movement, both entirely up to you:
- Doing it. Any logged set of a movement — through the coach's own ramp, or you adding it yourself — proves you can, and it's unlocked from then on.
- Asking for it. Tell the coach you want to try the barbell, or pull-ups specifically, and it's unlocked for that conversation. You don't need the exact catalog name — "I want to use the barbell" is enough.
Either way, the decision is yours. The coach just won't make the mistake of assuming for you. If you already know what you're capable of, here's exactly how to unlock it without waiting to log a set first.
